Gene Horton

GLEF_Gene Horton_Board MemGene, a fifth generation Oregonion, was born in Eugene, Oregon and raised in the small town of Junction City, Oregon. Graduating from Junction City High School in 1962 he went on to Oregon State University for two years then transferred to the University of Oregon from where he graduated in 1966.  He married Sue Sanborn (whom he had known since they were in the 1st grade together) the day before U of O graduation. Gene received a commission in the U.S. Army earned through ROTC and spent three years in Germany as an artillery officer. Leaving the service in 1969 he went to work for JC Penney in Portland and Salem for the next 13 years. In 1982 Gene left Penney’s in 1982 to start his own office supply store. Horton’s Office Supply grew to two stores with 12 employees at one point. Gene closed the last store in 2010 to retire.

Gene is an active member and past president of the Hillsboro Rotary Club. At Hillsboro First Baptist Church, he is a member of the board of Overseers. Both Gene and Sue enjoy membership in The Royal Rosarians.

Gene and Sue have three children and seven grandchildren. They are both pleased to be a part of GLEF and hope to go to Cambodia some day to see the work that the group is doing.
